Interview with professor Avi Loeb where you will here the most recent updates on 3i Atlas including 7 jets being fired out of the comet.
The 3I/ATLAS is an interstellar comet—the third confirmed object (after 1I/ʻOumuamua in 2017 and 2I/Borisov in 2019) to originate from outside our solar system and pass through it. It was discovered in May 2025 by the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) survey telescope in Chile, earning its name from the discovery team, the “I” for interstellar, and the “3” as the third such object.Key Details:Origin and Path: It follows a hyperbolic orbit (eccentricity of about 6.1, the highest recorded for a natural object), confirming it came from another star system. Its trajectory suggests it entered from the direction of the constellation Lyra, but its exact home system may never be pinpointed due to cosmic ray alterations over billions of years.
Composition: Observations from telescopes like the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) reveal it’s an active comet with a solid icy nucleus (estimated 3–5 km across) surrounded by a coma of gas and dust. It’s unusually rich in carbon dioxide (CO₂), with traces of water ice, water vapor, carbon monoxide, carbonyl sulfide, and nickel in its plume—possibly indicating different formation conditions than Solar System comets. No significant tail has been observed, which is atypical, leading to a “blob of light” appearance in images.
Activity: It became active (outgassing) unusually early, at about 6.4 AU from the Sun, likely driven by volatile ices like CO₂ rather than water. This caused brightness surges, monitored by citizen astronomers via networks like Unistellar.
Timeline: It reached perihelion (closest to the Sun) on October 30, 2025, at 1.4 AU (just inside Mars’ orbit). Its closest approach to Earth was on December 19, 2025, at ~1.8 AU (170 million miles away)—far too distant for visibility to the naked eye or binoculars, and posing no threat. It’s now exiting the inner Solar System, passing near Jupiter in March 2026 before heading back to interstellar space at high speed (26 km/s relative to the Sun).
Observations: Tracked by NASA, ESA, and global teams using missions like Mars Express, Juice, and Juno. It was imaged during solar conjunction on October 21, 2025, by the GOES-19 satellite. Data will inform future missions like ESA’s Comet Interceptor (launching 2029).
While most astronomers classify it as a natural comet, its anomalies (e.g., no tail, forward glow, high CO₂, nickel traces) have sparked speculation from figures like Harvard’s Avi Loeb about a possible artificial origin (e.g., alien probe), though evidence remains inconclusive and the consensus favors a natural “cold fossil” from another star. Ongoing analysis of its data continues to refine our understanding.
